Patients are moved from the procedure room to a recovery area in the treatment centre.  Depending on the country where treatment takes place, patients are typically discharged on the day of the procedure (in the U.S.) or may stay overnight for observation to comply with local radiation regulations.  Patients discharged on the day of the treatment may proceed home under instruction from their doctor.

Post Treatment Care

As for any equivalent small operative procedure, patients should be kept under observation and vital signs monitored. The transfemoral groin incision should be monitored for 24 hours for haematoma formation. The patient may continue these observations at home if released the same day as the procedure. The patient should remain supine for 4 to 6 hours, with full mobilisation after 24 hours. If a femoral closure device is used, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed.

It is recommended that a SPECT scan of the upper abdomen is performed within 24 hours following implantation of SIR-Spheres® Y-90 resin microspheres. The SPECT scan will detect the Bremsstrahlung radiation from the yttrium-90 SPECT scan to confirm the placement of the microspheres in the liver.
